What is BMI?

BMI also known as body mass index is a screening tool that considers the height and weight of a person. It puts people in four weight groups (underweight, healthy weight, obese, overweight) that could be connected to health issues. However, BMI doesn't directly measure the health of a person.

Healthy weight refers to having a BMI that is that ranges between 18.5 or 24.9. If you are in this category, it is linked to fewer health issues than those in the overweight as well as obese and overweight categories.

What do I need be my BMI should my BMI

"Healthy Weight": The "healthy weight" category--defined as a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9--is widely regarded to be ideal. Be aware that BMI does not provide a complete measure. It does, for instance, not take into account the amount of fat you carry or the location in which fat is distributed, which are factors that can impact your metabolic health.

What do you calculate BMI calculated?

Body mass index (BMI) is a persons weight expressed in kilograms multiplied by the quadratic of height in meters.

How accurate is BMI?

The answer is dependent. BMI cannot tell you the proportion of your weight is made up of muscle or fat, so it misses information important for assessing your health risks. For example, athletes can have an excessive BMI due to their muscle mass even if there's no evidence of obesity. Furthermore, the definitions for the weight categories were based mostly on white people, which means they may not be as accurate for people of other races and ethnic groups.

How can age or race influence BMI?

BMI does not differentiate between bone, fat and muscle. Consequently, it may be less accurate in older people, who tend to decrease their muscle mass and density as they age. (That's why people who are over 65 might gain from a slightly higher BMI that is between the 25-27 age range.) Research has shown how the BMI standard for defining obesity exaggerates the risk of Black people , and undervalues risk for people who are of Asian of Asian descent. This could cause ineffective treatment and health disparities.

Are BMI guidelines similar for men and women?

The amount of body fat differs between women and men. For women the ideal body fat should be between 20 and 21 percent. (The typical American woman has about 22 to 25 per cent body fat.) For males, the recommended level of body fat should be between 13 and 17 percent. (The average American man has about 17.5% to 19.5% body fat.)

To find out your ideal body weight, apply this formula:

  • Women 100 pounds in body mass for the first 5 feet of height plus 5 pounds for every increment of an inch.
  • Men Men: 106 pounds of corpus weight to the first 5 feet of height plus 6 pounds for every additional inch.

If you've got a tiny body frame, subtract 10 percent from the figure. For a large frame, add 10 percent.
