In response to her mother's requests, Hazel Grace Lancaster aged 17, reluctantly goes to a support group for cancer patients. To be able to breathe she relies on an oxygen tank that she can carry around because of her cancer. She meets a boy at one of her gatherings and learns his name is Augustus Waters. He's there to help Isaac and their friend. Isaac was diagnosed with a canceroustumor within his left eye, which he had successfully removed. Now , he has to have his other eye removed. Augustus arrives at Hazel following the discussion and tells her he has a tumor in one eye. He invites Hazel to visit his home and go to the cinema. The two discuss how they've dealt with their experienceswith the disease. Hazel finds out that she has thyroid cancer and it has spread to her lungs. Augustus was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and is now cancer-free. Augustus and Hazel are in agreement to share their top novels prior to taking Hazel home. Augustus provides Hazel the book The Price of Dawn and Hazel suggests An Imperial Fliction.

Hazel writes about the beauty of An Implacable Affliction. The novel is about Anna, a little girl who has cancer. It's the one book she's ever read that reflects her experiences. She talks about how the novel abruptly concludes at the end of the sentence and leaves the reader without closureas the the fates of the characters. She speculates on Peter Van Houten's mysterious author of the novel, who she believes was a fugitive from Amsterdam soon after the publication. He hasn't heard from since.

Augustus mysteriously informs Hazel that he stumbled across Van Houten's personal assistant Lidewij and was capable of establishing an email correspondence through her. Hazel shares Van Houten's letter with him, and they devise a list to ask Van Houten questions. This is an attempt to clarify the mystery's confusing conclusion. Hazel is concerned about Anna's fate. She is convinced that Anna's mother will survive her daughter's passing and her parents will be fine after Hazel's death. Van Houten then replies that he can only answer Hazel's questions in person. He invites her to visit him should she ever be visiting Amsterdam.

Augustus invites Hazel to a picnic soon after. He reveals that he planned a Dutch-themed picnic. He reveals that Van Houten an organization that grants wishes to children who have cancer is willing to help him fulfill his dream. He touches her face and she is delighted. She is able to see that she loves him, however, she is certain that she will hurt him when she dies. She likens herself to weapon.

Hazel experiences an intense episodeof the fluid accumulation in her lungs, and is taken to the ICU. After a few days, Hazel gets released from the hospital and is able to discover that Augustus has never left the hospital's waiting area. Hazel is sent a mail from the Van Houten. The letter is more intimate and obscure. Hazel is more determined to go to Amsterdam than ever after reading the letter. But there's one issue: her parents and team of doctors don't believe that she's fit enough to travel. It seems unsolvable up until the doctor. Maria, one of her most experienced doctors, convincing Hazel that she needs to travel to the freedom to live her life.

Augustus, Hazel and Hazel's mother plan to visit Amsterdam. However, When Hazel and Augustus encounter Van Houten for the first time, they realize that he is not a brilliant genius, but an angry drunk who is unable to answer Hazel's questions. They leave Van Huouten's bar in complete disappointment and are accompanied by Lidewij, who is shocked at Van Houten's conduct. Augustus and Hazel exchange a passionate kiss at the conclusion of their journey to cheers of the spectators. They then return to their hotel, which is where they meet in the very first moment. Augustus admits to Hazel that he used an body scan while within the ICU. The scan revealed that his cancer was back and spreading across. Hazel realizes it is Augustus is the grenade as they return to Indianapolis. The state worsensand He loses his charm and confidence. While he gets more vulnerable and afraid but he's still charming to Hazel. The moment she stops calling him Augustus and instead refers to him as Gus as his parents. Hazel recognizes how much she has a love for him. Augustus's condition deteriorates quickly. Augustus hosts a prefuneral, as well. Isaac and Hazel provide eulogies. Hazel adopts a line from Van Huyten on infinitesimal and greater. She tells Augustus how much she cherishes her and how she would never ever trade the time they spent together for anything.

Augustus dies eight days later. Hazel is shocked to meet Van Houten attending her funeral. Van Houten explained the fact that Gus and he had a long-standing correspondence, and that Augustus required Van Houten to make amends for the excursion from Amsterdam. Van Houten also said the Hazel should attend his funeral. Van Houten reveals Anna's fate abstractly, but Hazel isn't bothered. Hazel is told by Isaac within a couple of days that Augustus wrote a note for her. When Hazel is trying to locate the letters and finds Van Houten, he appears. He informs her drunk that Anna was his daughter's name. When she was only eight years old, she died from cancer. An Imperial Abilities was his literary attempt to reconcile himself to her passing. Van Houten is advised by Hazel to drink and start writing another book.

Hazel is later informed she was Augustus delivered the pages directly to Van Houten as he wanted Van Houten to write a thoughtful tribute to Hazel. Lidewij forces Van Houten to read the book, and then sends them to Hazel. Hazel completes the novel by reading the words of Augustus. He explained that, while it's normal to be wounded in this world, we also have the option to choose to let others take care of it. And he was satisfied with his decision. He hopes that she will be happy with her decision. Hazel says she's pleased with the way the novel ends.
